Sandro Naglia – bio

Sandro Naglia earned a Master’s Degree in Voice Performance from the Academy of Music of Pescara (Italy), and a Master’s Degree in Arts from “La Sapienza” University of Rome. Over the years, his artistic activity has developed in various fields:

– Music: he made his debut as a tenor in 1987 at the Teatro Carcano in Milan, and two years later he distinguished himself in Monteverdi’s Vespers of the Blessed Virgin conducted by Sir J. E. Gardiner in London, Venice and at Bath Festival, recorded by DG-Archiv. In 2000 he began to study conducting, which since 2007 (Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo at the Spring Early Music Festival in Melbourne, Australia) has been developing as a parallel activity to singing.

He has performed in almost 30 countries throughout the world, in such venues as Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Wiener Musikverein, Wiener Konzerthaus, Edinburgh Festival, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, New York Lincoln Center, The Frick Collection, opera houses of Rome, Bologna, Venice, Palermo, Monte-Carlo. He has recorded more than 40 CDs for DG-Archiv, Naive-Opus 111, Glossa and other labels.

– Literature: as a writer and an essayist, he has published in many  magazines and academic journals. Moreover, he has translated into Italian works by Henry James, Fernando Pessoa, Marguerite Duras.

Among his books: Mann, Mahler, Visconti: «Morte a Venezia» (1995; new edition: IkonaLíber, 2012), Festina Lente. Taccuini 1993-2007 (Tabula fati, 2011), I paraggi e il mondo (ibid., 2014), Repertorio (IkonaLíber, 2014) La curvatura del cielo. Taccuini 2007-2013 (Tabula fati, 2016), Camera a nebbia. Taccuini 2014-2019 (ibid., 2020).

– Visual arts: he has collaborated as a musician with several visual artists, including Allora & Calzadilla for the performances In the Midst of Things (Venice Art Biennale 2015) and Mains Hum (MAXXI, Rome, 2018). Since 2016 he has been regularly writing in the Italian contemporary art webzine “Collezione da Tiffany”.
