Description
Join our class taught by Demetrio! This class is geared towards advanced students.
The class meets on Tuesday, at 3:00 – 5:00 PM, on the following dates: June 30, July 7, July 14, July 21, July 28.
This history course will be based on primary sources (images, documents, videos) that will be pre-circulated and presented by the professor in session as a base for a group discussion which functions as the core of each class. The major aim is to grasp what made the fabric of the Italian national consciousness in its setting and connect it to our own understanding and experience.
Part 1 of the course will range from the Italian unitary struggle following the Napoleonic period to the turn of the century with its -isms and the two World Wars that followed.
Part 2 of the course will investigate the impact of post-modernity on Italy, reconstructions after the wars, the new political and economic orders, the tensions of the Anni di Piombo and the rise of the long-term legacy of Berlusconi.
A week before the class the professor will email the materials that will be discussed in class with some discussion questions for the students.
Class structure:
- A 15 minutes interaction to the historical context of the primary source.
- A 45 minutes group discussion answering the recirculated questions. These will be the base for the discussion but the structure of it will not be strict and can be adjusted to the various directions the discussion will be heading towards.
- A 10 minutes conclusion where the professor will link the current primary source analyzed to the topic of the upcoming class.
